Portland Oregon and Austin Texas famously have used the slogan "Keep Portland / Austin weird." I think weirdness requires action, though. It's our responsibility to make the weirdness we want to see in the world!
To move forward and to grow our community of artists and makers and genuine weirdos here in Richmond Virginia, we have a responsibility to be a part of making our fabulous little city as weird and wonderful as we want!
And anyway, keeping something a certain way feels too much like gatekeeping to me, and gatekeeping is so done. I'm here for collaboration and mutual support networks and the beauty of the messiness and weirdness it is to be a human in this world.
Making art, making music, supporting artists, believing in our artistic community, that's our greatest power: so let's make it really weird.
I've been making "Make Richmond Weird" stickers semi-secretly for over 20 years here in Richmond VA, and it's time for branching out.
Email me your name and address and venmo @caitberg $5 for a postage-paid MAKE RVA WEIRD sticker (shown above).
Or pick one up between Thanksgiving & Christmas 2025 at VisArts on Main Street at Bizarre Market.
In the meantime: make some art! Have fun! Make art or music with friends or strangers! Try something new! Meet some new people! Get supplies at SCRAP RVA and join the weird art community! Get an old instrument at a yard sale and learn how to play! Start a singalong group in the park with some friends! Do whatever brings you joy! Start today! It doesn't matter what, just make something!
You don't have to be good at anything. Let yourself make any kind of art and be joyous in the making. Make something weird and delightful and uniquely YOU, and experience the connection to all of humanity: making art & music is a fundamental & ancient part of being human.
Be human, be your uniquely weird and imperfect self, experience joy, and be grounded in the feeling of making!
With love & weirdness & joyousness,
Cait!
